With impeccable good timing, our Malaysian holiday plans saw us leaving Langkawi a good week before the tsunami hit it. We were in Johor at the time, well out of harm’s way. As it turned out, Langkawi seemed to escape without much damage (although we suspect the hotel we stayed in on Pantai Cenang is a bit of a mess now), certainly in contrast to Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India et al. Saw a spokesperson from the World Food Programme appealing for £1.5million on the BBC earlier on, which is really an incredibly small amount of money compared to what most Western governments piss up the wall on a daily basis. Come on, sort it out…
